CostumesGENERAL
To be a member of Krewe de Canailles (“KDC”), you must:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Pay membership dues.
- Agree to comply with the membership rules.
- Sign a waiver to walk in the parade.
- Assure your costumes, throws, and floats fit with the annual theme and parade guidelines. (See below for details)
Members of Krewe de Canailles are required to 1) have fun and 2) BE NICE OR LEAVE. Our values of inclusivity, ingenuity and sustainability stem from a vision of kindness to one another and our city. As representatives of KDC, members are required to act good-naturedly at all KDC events. Vulgar and offensive words and actions will not be tolerated, nor will any illegal behavior. Y’all can be canailles and still be nice.
If at any event a member acts in a way that KDC Leadership determines is harmful or offensive,, that member will be removed from the event. KDC Leadership may also, in its discretion, terminate your membership.
MEMBERSHIP DUES
Each member must pay individual membership dues. All membership sign-ups and dues are due by January 15, 2023.
Membership includes:
- Invitation to Krewe de Canailles social events held throughout the year
- Admission to walk in the parade with the Krewe (or your Sub-Krewe)
- Admission to parade after-party
No refunds will be given for dues because of expulsion from KDC events for bad behavior or if a member relinquishes membership. Membership in the Krewe is limited and provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
MEETINGS
Meetings will be announced via email and social media. We ask that all individual members and Sub-Krewe Captains please attend all scheduled KDC meetings.
SUB-KREWES
Sub-Krewes must have at least five (5) members and may have up to forty (40) members. All Sub-Krewes are required to designate a Captain to serve as the point of contact between their Sub-Krewe members and KDC leadership. All Captains are expected to uphold the KDC membership rules and to report any member in non-compliance, or report any incidents during the parade to the officers present.
Each Sub-Krewe is required to have a central costume theme in accordance with the parade theme to distinguish themselves as a Sub-Krewe, but also maintain cohesion with KDC. Themes must be approved by KDC Leadership by January 15, 2022.
All Sub-Krewes must have a banner announcing their Krewe name. This banner must measure eight (8) feet to twelve (12) feet in length, and be carried in front of the Sub-Krewe members for the entire parade route.
Every Sub-Krewe with over 10 members may have up to four (4) volunteers to assist the Sub-Krewe with pacing and communicating with the event coordinator and police during the parade. These volunteers will not be considered KDC members and may not dress in costume for the parade, as they need to be identifiable by the KDC event coordinator. Volunteers must purchase a wristband to attend the after party. Volunteers will be required to attend a pre-parade meeting to receive instructions.
Each Sub-Krewe is also responsible for providing music for their group. This can be anything from members playing instruments, to some type of sound system, to arranging a band to play. All music must be family friendly with no vulgarity or offensive language. Edited versions should be used when applicable. Please notify KDC leadership no later than January 15, 2022 of your choice of music so we can plan the parade lineup.
INDIVIDUALS
While we are allowing Sub-Krewes to form within the overall KDC, we encourage individuals to join as well. There will be an Independent Krewe where anyone without a Sub-Krewe can march.
COSTUMES
Whether you are joining as an individual member or as part of a Sub-Krewe, you must be in full costume for the duration of the parade. Costumes must fit with the annual theme.
All costumes must be approved in advance by KDC Leadership, and will be reviewed before the parade during line up. If a member’s costume is deemed offensive or vulgar by KDC, that member will not march in the parade. Membership dues will not be refunded for failure to comply with membership rules.
We encourage costumes, floats, and throws to be as creative and visually stimulating as possible. Since we want to limit waste through excessive throws, we suggest using any renewable or recyclable materials you can.
If you have any questions or concerns about your costume before the parade, please email krewedecanailles@gmail.com.
PARADE
Aside from the police lead car and follow car, no motorized vehicles will be permitted in the parade. Floats must fit with the annual theme. Bicycles, wagons and any kind of woman- or man-powered floats are encouraged. Floats cannot exceed fifteen (15) feet in height, and ten (10) feet in length. All floats should be mobile throughout the entire parade. If an issue arises with your float, please pull over to the right side of the route until you are able to repair it or until the parade has passed.
Only KDC members in good standing can march in the parade. While you may interact with crowd members, please discourage them from marching with you. No children nor animals are permitted to march in the parade.
Please leave the beads at home, but feel free to bring environmentally-friendly throws. All throw must fit with the annual parade theme. Please ensure that all throws are family-friendly. No promotional throws from businesses are allowed. Further, please keep all waste to a minimum and either use the trash cans along the route, or collect your waste in a bag to throw away at the end of the route. We have a limited number of KDC signature wooden doubloons that Sub-Krewes may purchase as throws and/or souvenirs.
While all KDC members may bring and consume alcohol on the parade route, no member shall give alcohol to any parade patrons.
If any member engages in any illegal, offensive, or vulgar behavior, that member will be asked to leave. The offending member’s membership will be terminated immediately. Membership dues will not be refunded if a member is expelled for bad behavior.
In the event of any emergency or incident, notify the closest officer and your Sub-Krewe Captain if possible.
